Horror movies, fair ground rides, things that go bump in the night! Inspired by the very human enthusiasm of being frightened or uncomfortable, this project interrogates a subject that elicits negative emotions; imperfections in the human body and in inanimate objects.
As cultures get richer, consumers demand perfection in everything from our bodies to the objects we create. Natural imperfections connect us all, skin conditions trace individual vulnerabilities to remind us of our intimate relationship to global environmental and climate concerns. Priyatna presents a collection of conceptual upholstered furniture appearing to be contaminated or damaged, breaking with modernist design purity and aesthetics. Mysterious and ambiguous features create an uncanny effect and raise the question; is it safe to sit on?
